Leroy Logan Joins Black History Month Panel at UEL on Redefining Black Identity

On October 29, Leroy Logan MBE joined an inspiring panel discussion at the University of East London (UEL) for Black History Month. The event, titled Redefining Black Identity: Navigating Race and Self-Representation, brought together thought leaders to explore the evolving landscape of Black identity in the UK, with Leroy sharing his unique perspectives and decades of experience.

Held at UEL’s Docklands Campus, the session saw Leroy alongside panelists such as Lady Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, CEO of UK Black Pride, and Professor Winston Morgan, Director of Impact and Innovation at UEL. Guided by Dr. Jummy Okoya, UEL’s Dean of Institutional Equity, the conversation covered complex issues surrounding race, intersectionality, and self-representation. Leroy spoke candidly about his experiences as a Black man in public service, emphasizing the importance of resilience, positive role models, and challenging stereotypes to redefine identity.

Leroy’s insights on how institutions, especially universities, can foster supportive environments for Black students were particularly impactful. He highlighted the crucial role that education and authentic representation play in shaping both individual identities and community narratives. For Leroy, mentorship and active engagement are essential, as they provide a foundation for young people to thrive despite societal challenges.

The event closed with an engaging Q&A session, where attendees dove deeper into the themes discussed, leaving the audience with fresh perspectives and a call to action for fostering inclusion and equity across all sectors.
